Homemade Chia Seed and Peanut Butter Pups

Tips:
  • Substitute flour for a wheat-free alternative like rice or coconut flour if your dog is allergic to flour or wheat. The consistency may change a little, but just add some liquid to help.
  • Make sure your peanut butter DOES NOT contain xylitol as it is toxic to dogs. Always check the ingredients. We recommend Smooth Pic’s Peanut Butter for this recipe.
  • Chia Seeds are great for dogs, there are many health benefits as they contain a ton of great vitamins and minerals. If this is something new to their diet make sure you introduce them slowly (much like you would do with any other new food) as they are high in fibre and calories.
  • Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 months, or the freezer for up to 8.
  • Want more nutrition? You could also add pumpkin puree, ground flax seeds or flaxseed oil, mashed banana.

Ingredients:

For 24 biscuits

  • 2 1/2 cups wholewheat flour (or substitute)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon of chia seeds

For the icing

  • 1/3 cup cornstarch (or potato starch or arrowroot powder)
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 2-4 tablespoons hot water
Method:
  1. Preheat the oven to 350F.
  2. In a large bowl combine flour and the egg. Add chia seeds, peanut butter, water, honey and stir until you have a dough. The dough should be firm and sticky. Use your hands or the paddle attachment on your mixer.
  3. On a floured surface roll out the dough about 1/2 inch thick and use a cookie cutter to make fun dog-related shapes. Time to get creative!
  4. Bake for 18-20 minutes or until golden. (If you have smaller cookies, use less time, otherwise, the bottom might burn.)
  5. While the cookies are cooling make the frosting. Combine the peanut butter and honey and heat in the microwave in 15-second increments, stirring between, until melted.
  6. Add the melted peanut butter mixture to cornstarch and stir until just combined.
  7. Slowly add in water until you have reached the desired consistency. For thinner icing just add more water.
  8. Ice using a piping bag or just drizzle on top of each dog treat.
  9. The most important step of all – serve your homemade treats to your dog and watch them enjoy!
